Claude Enterprise vs ChatGPT Enterprise: what you are actually buying
[Claude for Enterprise](https://www.anthropic.com/enterprise) and [ChatGPT Enterprise](https://openai.com/enterprise) exist mostly to answer one question from your legal or risk team: what happens to the data we put in. Everything else on the feature list is secondary to that.
What you need to know
- The main thing a business tier buys is a contractual commitment that your inputs are not used to train public models, plus the admin controls to enforce policy.
- Both offer SSO, audit logging, centralised billing and larger context. The differences are at the edges rather than in the core.
- Claude leads on long-document work and careful writing. ChatGPT leads on breadth, images, voice and integrations.
- For most Australian businesses under 200 staff, the team tier rather than full enterprise is the right purchase.

Where this comes from: We run business tiers on both because client work makes it non-negotiable, and we have been through the procurement conversation with a national mortgage aggregator operating under an Australian Credit Licence. The questions that stalled that process are the ones this article is organised around.
What the business tiers actually change
- Training commitment. Your inputs and outputs are not used to train the public models. This is the clause procurement cares about and the reason consumer tiers are unsuitable for client work.
- Single sign-on and provisioning, so access follows your existing identity system and leaving employees actually lose access.
- Audit logging and admin visibility, which is what makes a policy enforceable rather than aspirational.
- Centralised billing instead of a dozen personal cards on expense reports.
- Larger context windows and higher usage limits.
You are not primarily buying a better model. You are buying the contractual and administrative wrapper that lets your business use one at all.
Where they genuinely differ
| Claude | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Long documents | Stronger. Holds much more at once. | Capable, less so at the extremes. |
| Following a detailed brief | Stronger. Adheres more closely to constraints. | Good, drifts more over length. |
| Code | Stronger on debugging and first-run correctness. | Very capable. |
| Images | Does not generate them. | Built in and good. |
| Voice | No. | Mature. |
| Integrations | Growing, narrower. | Broadest ecosystem. |
| Admin and governance | Solid, simpler. | Solid, more granular. |
The procurement questions worth asking both
Both vendors answer these well. Asking anyway matters, because the answers go in your own privacy documentation, and because your obligations under the Australian Privacy Principles do not transfer to a vendor just because the processing does.
- Is our data used to train your models, and where is that stated contractually rather than in a blog post?
- Where is data stored and processed, and does anything sit outside Australia?
- How long is data retained, and can we set that ourselves?
- What audit logs exist, and can we export them?
- What happens to our data if we leave?
- Which sub-processors touch it?
Do you need enterprise, or just team?
Most Australian businesses under about 200 staff do not need full enterprise. The team tier carries the training commitment and the essential admin controls at a much lower cost, and that is the clause that actually mattered.
Full enterprise earns its price when you need SSO against a specific identity provider, granular audit exports, procurement-grade agreements, or a dedicated support relationship. Below that threshold you are paying for governance machinery you will not use.
Be sceptical of anyone recommending enterprise without asking your headcount and your regulatory position first.
What we run and why
Claude for the long-document work, the writing systems and the agent runtimes, because brief adherence is what determines whether output ships without a rewrite. ChatGPT for images and exploratory research. Perplexity for anything where a claim needs a traceable source.
All on business tiers, because we handle client data and the saved subscription is not worth the risk. If you are choosing between them for the first time, Claude vs ChatGPT for business is the more practical starting point than the enterprise comparison.

Copilot vs ChatGPT: which one belongs in your business?
Copilot sits inside Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams. ChatGPT sits in a browser tab and does more. That difference decides it for most businesses, and not in the direction people expect.

Copilot is not one product. It is a brand covering at least five different things, which is why the question is confusing. Here is what each one actually is and which you probably mean.
